Financial instruments are assets that can be traded, or they can also be seen as packages of capital that may be traded. During the last three decades, the economic theory of banking has entered a process of change that has overturned economists’ traditional view of the banking sector. Before that, the banking courses of most doctoral programs in economics, business, or finance focused either on management aspects (with a special emphasis on risk) or on monetary aspects and their macroeconomic consequences. Thirty years ago, there was no such thing as a microeconomic theory of banking, for the simple reason that the Arrow-Debreu general equilibrium model (the standard reference for microeconomics at that time) was unable to explain the role of banks in the economy.

Corporate governance is the collection of mechanisms, processes and relations used by various parties to control and to operate a corporation. Governance structures and principles identify the distribution of rights and responsibilities among different participants in the corporation (such as the board of directors, managers, shareholders, creditors, auditors, regulators, and other stakeholders) and include the rules and procedures for making decisions in corporate affairs. Corporate governance is necessary because of the possibility of conflicts of interests between stakeholders, primarily between shareholders and upper management or among shareholders.

Investment management refers to the handling of financial assets and other investments not only buying and selling them. Management includes devising a short- or long-term strategy for acquiring and disposing of portfolio holdings. It can also include banking, budgeting, and tax services and duties, as well. Investment management helps to outperform inflation and allows clients to grow their income without inflation challenges.
